Behavioral Health Care Rooted in Understanding

At Renewed Thought Assessment & Behavioral Health Center, we provide comprehensive psychological assessment, therapy, and behavioral health services for children, adolescents, and adults.

We believe effective behavioral healthcare begins with understanding. Whether concerns involve attention, learning, emotions, behavior, executive functioning, or overall mental health, our team provides thoughtful evaluation, evidence-based treatment, and personalized recommendations designed to support long-term success.

“Too often, individuals receive therapy without understanding why they struggle — or a diagnosis without the support to move forward. We provide both, in one place.”

We offer both in-person and secure virtual services to ensure accessible care for children, adolescents, adults, and families throughout Virginia.

Our Clinical Philosophy

Every clinician at Renewed Thought shares a core belief: understanding drives healing. We take time to truly listen, to assess thoroughly, and to build care plans that are unique to each person — not templated or rushed.

Credentials & Licensure

All Renewed Thought clinicians hold active licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia and participate in ongoing continuing education. We maintain compliance with all applicable professional and ethical standards.

Supervision & Training

We are committed to excellence in clinical training. Associates completing licensure hours receive structured supervision and mentorship aligned with Virginia Board of Counseling and Board of Psychology requirements.

What We Help With

Comprehensive behavioral health support across the lifespan — for children, adolescents, and adults.

Anxiety & Mood Disorders

Anxiety and mood disorders are among the most common mental health challenges — and among the most treatable. Our clinicians provide thorough assessment to identify specific anxiety presentations and mood patterns, followed by evidence-based therapy tailored to each individual. We do not use one-size-fits-all approaches.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Social anxiety and social phobia
  • Panic disorder and panic attacks
  • Specific phobias
  • Depression and persistent depressive disorder
  • Seasonal affective patterns
  • Chronic stress and burnout
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Life transitions and adjustment disorder

ADHD & Executive Functioning

ADHD is frequently misunderstood and often under- or over-diagnosed. Our comprehensive evaluation process distinguishes true ADHD from anxiety, learning differences, trauma responses, and sleep issues that mimic ADHD symptoms — providing diagnostic clarity that guides treatment decisions and supports accommodations at school or work.

  • ADHD — inattentive, hyperactive, and combined presentations
  • Executive functioning deficits (planning, organizing, initiating)
  • Working memory and processing speed concerns
  • Time blindness and time management difficulties
  • Task initiation, follow-through, and completion
  • Impulsivity and emotional dysregulation
  • ADHD coaching support through therapy
  • Adult ADHD — newly identified or previously unmanaged
  • Differential diagnosis (ADHD vs. anxiety vs. learning disorder)

Learning & Academic Challenges

When a child struggles in school despite effort and support, the reason is not always obvious. A psychoeducational evaluation can uncover whether a learning disability, cognitive processing difference, attention issue, anxiety, or another factor is at play — and provide the documentation schools need to implement IEPs, 504 Plans, and testing accommodations.

  • Dyslexia and reading disorders
  • Dyscalculia (math learning disorder)
  • Dysgraphia (written expression disorder)
  • Auditory and visual processing difficulties
  • Processing speed concerns
  • Academic underperformance with unknown cause
  • IEP and 504 Plan evaluation support
  • College testing accommodations (SAT, ACT, AP exams)
  • School avoidance and school refusal
  • Gifted students with co-occurring challenges (twice-exceptional)
Children · Adolescents · Young Adults

Autism Spectrum & Developmental

Autism spectrum disorder presents differently across age groups and individuals — particularly in girls and adults, where it is often missed or misdiagnosed for years. Our multidisciplinary evaluation approach includes developmental history, behavioral observations, standardized assessments, and clinical interview to provide accurate diagnosis and meaningful recommendations.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) — all levels of support needs
  • Social communication and social skills challenges
  • Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors
  • Sensory sensitivities and sensory processing differences
  • Masking and late-identified autism (especially in women and girls)
  • Early childhood developmental concerns
  • Intellectual and developmental disability evaluation
  • Diagnostic clarification when prior diagnoses are unclear
  • Transition planning for adolescents with ASD

Children · Adolescents · Adults

Behavioral & Family Concerns

Behavioral challenges in children and adolescents are often symptoms of an underlying unmet need — not simply “bad behavior.” We assess the full picture: emotional, cognitive, developmental, and environmental factors. Family involvement is welcome and encouraged throughout the evaluation and therapy process.

  • Oppositional behavior and defiance
  • Conduct concerns and aggression
  • Emotional outbursts and meltdowns
  • Parent-child relationship stress
  • Divorce, family change, and blended family adjustment
  • Sibling conflict and family dynamics
  • Grief, loss, and bereavement
  • Selective mutism
  • Separation anxiety
  • Diagnostic uncertainty — when no clear diagnosis fits

Life Challenges & Self-Development

Not every reason to seek therapy involves a clinical diagnosis. Many people come to us during difficult seasons of life — transitions, identity questions, relationship struggles, or a general sense that something is not right. Therapy provides a structured space to process, grow, and build the skills needed to move forward with clarity and confidence.

  • Identity and self-esteem
  • Life transitions (college, career, parenthood, retirement)
  • Relationship and communication difficulties
  • Work-related stress and professional burnout
  • Perfectionism and high-achiever anxiety
  • Caregiver stress and compassion fatigue
  • Cultural adjustment and identity
  • LGBTQ+ affirming support
  • Chronic illness adjustment and health-related coping
  • Building resilience and coping skills

Neuropsychological & Medical

Some patients need more than standard psychological assessment — they need a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation to understand how the brain is functioning across multiple cognitive domains. We provide detailed evaluations for complex presentations and can collaborate with neurologists, pediatricians, and psychiatrists to support integrated medical and behavioral care.

  • Neuropsychological evaluation for complex or unclear diagnoses
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) — cognitive impact assessment
  • Memory concerns and cognitive changes in adults
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorder — neurocognitive impact
  • Learning challenges after medical illness or treatment
  • Pre-surgical neuropsychological evaluation (bariatric, etc.)
  • Gifted assessment and intellectual ability evaluation
  • Forensic or disability-related evaluation (select cases)
  • Coordination with medical team and specialist documentation

Out-of-Network Practice

We currently operate as an out-of-network practice while actively pursuing major insurance panel participation. This allows us to provide individualized care guided by clinical needs — not insurance restrictions.

We provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Before your appointment, ask your insurance:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
  • What is my deductible — has it been met?
  • What percentage is reimbursed out-of-network?
  • Are psychological evaluations covered?
  • How do I submit an out-of-network claim?

We are actively working toward insurance panel participation and will update patients as options expand.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Answers to what families and individuals ask most often about therapy, evaluations, and getting started.

How do I know if I need therapy or an evaluation?

You do not need to determine this on your own. Some individuals benefit from therapy to address anxiety, depression, stress, or life transitions. Others benefit from a psychological evaluation when diagnostic clarity, educational recommendations, or formal documentation is needed. During your initial consultation, our team will help identify the most appropriate starting point based on your specific concerns and goals — no guesswork required on your end.

Do I need testing before starting therapy?

Not necessarily. Many individuals begin therapy without formal testing. However, when concerns involve attention, learning, executive functioning, autism, or diagnostic uncertainty, a psychological evaluation may be recommended to provide additional insight and guide treatment planning. We’ll discuss what makes the most sense for your situation during your first appointment.

What ages do you work with?

We provide services for children, adolescents, adults, and families. Services and clinicians vary by age group and presenting concerns — our team will match you with the most appropriate provider during scheduling.

How long does a psychological evaluation take?

The evaluation process varies depending on the referral question and type of assessment. Most evaluations include a clinical interview, record review, standardized testing sessions (typically 1–4 sessions of 2–4 hours each), interpretation of findings, a comprehensive written report, and a feedback session with recommendations. Report preparation typically takes 2–3 weeks after the final testing session. Your clinician will discuss the full timeline before services begin.

How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies based on individual needs, goals, and presenting concerns. Some individuals benefit from short-term, solution-focused treatment over 8–12 sessions. Others choose longer-term therapy to address more complex concerns. Your clinician will work with you to develop a treatment plan aligned with your specific goals and reassess regularly.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?

Yes. Many therapy and consultation services are available through secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth for clients throughout Virginia. Some psychological evaluation services require in-person attendance depending on the type of testing being completed. Our team will discuss the most appropriate format during scheduling — including any technology requirements.

Do you accept insurance?

We currently operate as an out-of-network practice while actively pursuing participation with major insurance providers. We can provide detailed superbills — itemized receipts with all information your insurance company needs — for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We encourage you to contact your insurer before your first appointment and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits, your deductible, and the reimbursement percentage. Reimbursement is determined solely by your insurer.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt that contains the clinical and billing information insurance companies require for out-of-network reimbursement — including CPT codes, diagnosis codes, provider NPI, and dates of service. We provide superbills on request, which you can submit directly to your insurance carrier. Reimbursement eligibility depends on your specific plan.

Do you prescribe medication?

Not at this time. Renewed Thought currently provides therapy, psychological assessment, consultation, and behavioral health services. We plan to expand our services in the future to include psychiatric evaluations and medication management as part of our comprehensive behavioral health model. We collaborate with and can refer to prescribing providers in the area.

Will you communicate with my child's school or healthcare providers?

Yes — when appropriate and with your written authorization. We believe collaboration often improves outcomes and may coordinate with pediatricians, primary care providers, therapists, psychiatrists, school personnel, and educational specialists. Our reports are formatted for school use and accepted by Virginia public schools for IEP and 504 eligibility determinations.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

Your first appointment is focused on understanding your concerns, history, strengths, and goals. Your clinician will gather background information, discuss current challenges, answer your questions, and recommend the most appropriate next steps. This may include therapy, a psychological evaluation, consultation, or a combination. The goal is not simply to begin treatment — it is to understand your full picture first.

What is a Good Faith Estimate and do I receive one?

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate outlining the anticipated costs of your care before services begin. We provide this automatically before your first appointment. If your actual bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you have the right to dispute the charges through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. Learn more at cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
